For those of you that were still watching cartoons while some of us found the internet back in the 90's, there was a great idea that came about. It was the mid 90's and the internet was really just starting to gain momentum. Web pages were all rage since very few knew how to make them and even fewer had the resources to host them or have them hosted. Hosting companies were a new thing as well. Everything was new and alien.
Out of all of the came a hosting company called Geocities. It was one of several that would host your site for free. They also charged a small fee to shorten the URL to your site, a bit more web space and some extra web tools. I, like millions of other fledgling internet users flocked to Geocities and started learning how to code in HTML
Those days are long gone now and I've also just gotten word that Yahoo!, who purchased Geocities some years ago, is shutting the project down and scrubbing all the site contained within. I have to admit, I was actually saddened a bit by the news. Then I had to wonder if my old site was still there. Sure enough, I punched in http://www.geocities.com/~calimus and there it was. A archived leftover from somewhere between 1996-1997. That was the last time I can remember doing anything with the Geocities site. The code that was there was made even well before then.
So for now, you can still get to the site. I've made sure to save a copy of it for myself. I'll add that to my digital scrapbook. It's been a long time Geocities, and I hate to see you go even though I haven't visited for at least 12 years. You were a big part of my life where I honed some of my earliest skills. So long old friend.

Looks like bloggers will have to be a bit more carefull starting Dec 1. If your a blogger and you plug a product on your site, or twitter, or facebook, or even myspace (is that place still alive?), and you were payed by the manufacturer in any way to review or plug said product, you had better tell everyone you got payed. Fail to do so and it can result in a $11k fine.
It sounds much worse then it is really, but it's still a bit of a PITA legality. For a better understanding, check out what the fine folks of at Arstechnica have to say.

If you haven't heard about Google's new communications project called Wave, don't worry, you arn't the last to know. This cat is still only half out of the bag.
Seems that the code monkeys over at Google have really been working some overtime. Wave will possibly be the next generation in on-line communications and is also looking to bump the current system of e-mail off the map as well. it's kind of like, IM client meets, e-mail client, meets online forum, meets collaboration client and a few other tools tossed in for good measure. While this is very interesting, I'm not sure if I like this idea.
However, I'm still learning about it and you should as well. Ars Technica has this article on what they have seen from Wave as well as a nice breakdown of how it works. So this article does a great job of explaining what Google's ideas is, but does get a bit technical along the way. Even if you arn't the technical kind of person, read the article. The super geeky part isn't very long but the rest will provide a lot of information.

Ok, so that Apple App Store is pretty slick, but like everything in the world, it's not all free. Well, Mozilla thinks that maybe something hsould be. So they now haveFashion FireFox. It's basicly an addon/app store for the FireFox browser (which Techography has adopted as it's browser of choice). While there isn't a ton of apps on there just yet, there are a few nice ones. So, if you are using FireFox, give the Fashion site a shot and see if there is anything that strikes your fancy.

So, I've known about this for a bit, but wanted to have a shot at playing with it first. Sometime in the last 24 hours, Google unleashed it's first attempt at a web browser. They call it Chrome and so far, it's come out of the gate running like a madman.
In the 2 hours I've played with it so far, it's loaded about 85% of the pages I've visited in half the time IE7 or Firefox has. How it handles more complex sites, forms and web based multimedia I'll find out over the next few days. However, if you are the type that like to try things out, point your current browser of choice to http://www.google.com/chrome and give it a try. So far the only thing that hasn't worked perfect is it's importing of bookmarks from IE7. It certainly got the majority, but I've noticed a few missing. Certainly nothing to cry over at this point.
As a matter of fact, I've posted this using Chrome. So it's already found to be 100% compatable with Techography. Still has a way to go (testing wise) before I'll give it my stamp of approval (if thats even worth anything).

 Yes Friends, it's that time.
Via Joel at Rocky Top Talk I found it is time for the 2007 College Football Blogger Awards.Nominate us now! :)
As EDBS put it:
Writer’s strike be damned–this ain’t no pinko union shop. The 2007 CFBAs are here, and it is time to recognize only the most eloquent, witty, and fart-joke encrusted verbal distractions from around the blogosphere for this year’s round of awards. (Joel and T. Kyle have already made their announcements earlier today. Check them out, since we’re bound to leave out important information, like how to nominate people, when they’re going to be awarded, or what they are in the first place.)
In an effort to do what we fail in flames to do every day here at EDSBS.com, we will focus on the details, particularly of the nomination process.
Nominations will open today and will continue through next Sunday night, January 27. The week of January 28 will be spent culling the nominations into a list of three to five official nominees for each category. These nominees will be announced essentially the same way they were last year -- at intervals on Monday, February 4 at EDSBS, MGoBlog, Burnt Orange Nation, Dawg Sports, and Rocky Top Talk.
To cast the widest net possible, anyone – bloggers and their readers alike – can make nominations.
Orson Swindle at Every Day Should Be Saturday will be this year’s host. He will have the specifics on the nominations later this morning, but one thing bears emphasis by repetition here: the best way for a blogger to nominate another blogger or a post is to say something nice about him, her, or it in a post. Have a look at the links to the Award Presentations in the Trophy Case and notice that they contain a lot of quotes from and links to nomination posts. Yes, it makes the presenters’ task of writing the presentation post easier, but it’s also nice to be quoted and linked to during the presentation of the award.
Details below the Fold! Read More!

Triticle- The Wheat Rye Guy has passed away.
I'm touched a bit with sorrow as often he and I passed E-mails back and forth. We also both worked in the Cellular industry and swapped Cell stories. I even threw some work his way upon occasion.
Unfortunately he was also extremely ill.
He died December 13th, having never regained consciousness. He had Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and it had spread to the brain.
Thoughts and Prayers go out from many members of the blogsphere.
I'm ashamed to admit, but I didn't know either until John mentioned it.
I'm losing touch with the blog world.
And this time I missed something...... and someone..... I considered important to it.

For those of you who may have read any number of the articles we've linked from here to Noble Eagle, you may have noticed that he's been oddly silent the last few months.
I can't go in to details, but all is well with him.
He's on TDY, is getting in to shape, and is debating whether or not to return to blogging but current military regulations stymie that somewhat.
Otherwise he is doing well, and we look forward to hopefully hearing from him again in the future!
