The perfect Watch

Hardware

Lets face it, it's a digital world.  Everything is digital these days.  Digital phones, digital cameras and even digital cable.  However, there's been a one serious hold out that know one really things about.  Watches.  Digital watches are nothing new.  Actually, I think they were one of the first digital devices for the masses.  However, they have always looked cheap and mostly unattractive.  Analog watches still rule the roost when it comes to a snazzy time pieces that are accepted in the high class environment ( something I would know nothing about).  The other half of the battle is the fact that most of todays youth couldn't read an analog clock if they had to.  Well, now you can have both in a great looking package.

The Shadow ss is a classic looking analog watch with a small secret.  The center of the watch containes a LCD that can't be seen untill you press a button and the time is digitaly displayed.  Even better, you can set the digital portion to be the same as the analog or for whatever timezone you wish.

Daughter + iPhone + Toilet = Me to the Rescue

Apple

So my daughter dropped her month old iPhone in the toilet the other night.  I'm not sure of the particulars of how this event took place, nor do I really want to know.  What I was glad to find out was that it was at the very least, a clean bowl.  Naturally I find this out after she's dropped in my hands and I ask why the $600 phone she bought is water logged.

So without even taking an extra breath, she finished the explination and follows it with a "can you fix it?  Because it's not turning back on."

Can I fix it?  That is one hell of a loaded question.  Read on for the details and the conclusion.

Yesterday's Downtime

AnnouncementSome of you might have noticed that the site was down for a little bit yesterday (approx - 2 hours). This was due to hardware failure on the database server. The good news is that it wasn't a failure in the drive array, so that means no data loss. So new hardware was installed and the server brought back up. I apologize for anyone that was inconvenienced by the downtime as well as not having a chance to post anything about it until now.  Currently, everything is running in the greenzone.

IDE spiraling down the drain

Hardware

With the advent of SATA and SATA 3G I've been wondering when IDE would really start to fall by the way-side.  Seems that time as come This article at Ars basically states how Segate seem to be the first hard drive manufacturer that will be halting production on IDE hard drives at the end of this year.  I'm sure it won't be long before the rest of them follow suit, but I think there will still be enough IDE drives to go around for some time.

However, I'm not sad to see them go.  The advantages of SATA warrent the end of an era for IDE.  Quicker access times, larger data-pipe, flash memory as cache and much smaller power and data connections.  Sounds like the right mix to me.

Defying all Explanation

Internet

Let me tell you just a little about Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

First off it's the closest town to me, being about 10 miles south from the Spite Family Wilderness Retreat.

Secondly it's not a big town. Population is just over 2,500. Mostly farmland. A few subdivisions built in the last 2 years.

But this morning, I recieved a shock. Or rather a jaw dropping epiphany.

Here's a hint: The Internet topic for this article, is correct.

PMI/Blackfive Embed Program

InternetI received this via Laughing Wolf, and I felt it was something that definitely needed to be shared!

I'm short on time so I'll just quote directly from LW's E-mail he sent me. I'll try to talk more on the subject later, but I'm just hamstrung currently as some may have noticed by my minuscule blogging.

At any rate here is the E-mail!

The joint embed program is a fantastic opportunity on several levels.  First up is Bill Roggio's PMI effort, which is real journalism at its best.  Bill supports a number of the better/best real journalists around the world.

Second is the unique nature of the joint  Blackfive/PMI embed as outlined by Grim.

Third is the ability to start making a variety of tools and opportunities available to all bloggers.

Fourth is the ability to start sending other embeds out around the world.  Yes, off-the-record, I would love to be that second embed.  I will be glad whomever gets that opportunity.  Any and all help and links you can give to PMI and/or the joint embed program with Blackfive would be very much appreciated.

I personally can't think of anyone better of whom to use as a Embed than LW. He's analytical, clear cut, and is not a fist pounder for either the Administration or the Political Doom Dance that has been taking place.

In my opinion you couldn't get a much more middle of the road view point than from he.

With a Recommendation Like This....

HardwareWho wouldn't want this chair?

I mean really, if Serenity can be reduced to a melting puddle of goo in the floor, then dammit I MUST have it.

Anything that reduces tough women to drooling, puddles is a must have for any male of the species!

Now to try it on my wife!

*bad French accent mixed with Southhern drawl*

"C'mere little chair! Hhahahaha! You WEEL be MINE!"

Excellent iPhone Review

Apple

As much as everyone either loves or hates Apple's iPhone, I'm in the middle.  I think it's a neat gadget, but it's not something I need.  However, my daughter just had to have it and thus she bought one.  I however, have not had the oppertunity to play with it for more then 5min so I haven't been able to do an actual review.  Thank God for Ars, as they have done a fantasic, in-depth review.

So, love it or hate it, go check out their many page long review and be better armed to get one or to talk smack about it.  If you are going to talk smack at least be well educated when you do it.

In the mean time, I'm going to try and swipe my daughters from her long enough to form my own opinion.  Maybe take a few pics if I have enough time.
