So Laurent Gaffi says there is a bug in Windows Media Player which could allow maleware to infect a PC by use of media files. This tends to grab everyones attention because even the lamest of all PC users has figured out how to watch movies and listen to music on their PC's right?
Well, today MS says thats a bunch of crap and that the what Gaffi discovered is a "reliability issue with no security risk to customers,"
Let me think about that, a reliability issue, meaning that there "could" be code that "could" cause the software to work in a way it wasn't intended to. Doesn't sound very reassuring does it? Then agian, when doesn't MS products have a million issues with it? It's just business as usual right?
For those that didn't want to catch the link, Gaffi says this issue exists in the following versions of WMP 9, 10 and 11. Now go scan your tunes with your AV software and stop pirating music. At least till there is a patch out.
In light of BS's resignation, I feel it's time to set Techography back on the course I had intended it for. To be about Technology and helping the confused be less confused.
Before anyone even thinks it, BloodSpites leaving has nothing to do with he and I on a personal level. In all honesty, I found out the same way that everyone else did, I read it here. BS and I will talk soon I hope and I'll be sure to relay anything he wants known when that happens. Untill then, I wish him luck with any endevors he's currently taking on.
Now, with the unpleasentries out of the way I'd like to say that I'm hoping to turn this site into an actual community of sorts. Technology is ever changing and in current times, it's changing a lot. Many are confused and frustraited and this is what I'd like to help combat. So, my hope is that I can find some time in my work/life schedule to get back to doing what I set out to do in the first place. Though I will admit that it was a lot easier to do this back in 99' when life hadn't landed on my head to it's fullest extent.
As always, I hope some of you will help from time to time and submit information to the site or even join in and become a staffer. I never turn down anyone who's willing to help others in this arena. So keep an eye out, I hope to have things on their way very soon.
I've tossed a new poll up for everyones input. It is time for a format change here at Techography?
I'm asking because while BloodSpite has done a great job of keeping content coming to the site with some help from PGS, the political and Military realm was not was this site was created for. This is not a slam on military content, BloodSpite will be the first one to tell you that I back my countries military men and Women and come from a military family. However, the politics can go right out the window. I'm not 80 years old and there is more then politics to talk about in my world.
The idea behind Techography was to be an info source for Technology of all kinds. I'd personally like to get back to that. However, I do know that we have a small readership and I not only thank you for coming to the site, but I also value your input. Would you still come here if I change the format back? Would you like to see some format changes? I'm open to any and all suggestions (save for the ones where you tell me to go to hell, I can do without those).
So hit the poll and don't stop and just the yes/no. Post a comment and tell me what your thoughts and ideas are. Everything will be taken under consideration.
Ok, so that Apple App Store is pretty slick, but like everything in the world, it's not all free. Well, Mozilla thinks that maybe something hsould be. So they now haveFashion FireFox. It's basicly an addon/app store for the FireFox browser (which Techography has adopted as it's browser of choice). While there isn't a ton of apps on there just yet, there are a few nice ones. So, if you are using FireFox, give the Fashion site a shot and see if there is anything that strikes your fancy.
Between, Training, and School, Travelling and Hurricane's, I've been extremely busy the last few weeks.
The Day of Reckoning did not go unoticed but sadly I was unable to do much about it.
That being said, i wanted to take a moment to wish my good friend, long time bud, brother in beer, cigars, basket-beer, lake parties, anti-prom gatherings, vehicle repair, computer work, website writing and just general all around trouble, a Happy Birthday.
The guy who keeps the backside of Techography running, and keeps we writers honest.
Sorry I'm late man. I'll do better next year. Happy belated Birthday, dude
So, I've known about this for a bit, but wanted to have a shot at playing with it first. Sometime in the last 24 hours, Google unleashed it's first attempt at a web browser. They call it Chrome and so far, it's come out of the gate running like a madman.
In the 2 hours I've played with it so far, it's loaded about 85% of the pages I've visited in half the time IE7 or Firefox has. How it handles more complex sites, forms and web based multimedia I'll find out over the next few days. However, if you are the type that like to try things out, point your current browser of choice to http://www.google.com/chrome and give it a try. So far the only thing that hasn't worked perfect is it's importing of bookmarks from IE7. It certainly got the majority, but I've noticed a few missing. Certainly nothing to cry over at this point.
As a matter of fact, I've posted this using Chrome. So it's already found to be 100% compatable with Techography. Still has a way to go (testing wise) before I'll give it my stamp of approval (if thats even worth anything).
Hurray! Upgrades completed and everything appears to be fine. One thing I did notice is that upon your first visit, the site may appear a little wonky, just hit the refresh button on your browser and all should be fixed. This issue happens because your browser keeps a copy of the site on your pc and compares it every time you visit. In this case, there are changes and without a refresh, it will take a while to correct itself.
If anyone finds any errors or issues, just let me know and I'll be sure to look into it.
As I mentioned in my last post, the site code for Techography has gotten a little out of date. So, since the weather is going to be crap this weekend (meaning I still can't get out on my bike for so "me" time) I'll bring the site current. This upgrade, unlike most in the past, will bring some visual changes. I'm not 100% certain what they will be as I will need to spend at least an hour going over the code change logs, but from a quick glance, I know there will be some visual changes.
You can expect the change to take place either Friday or Saturday night. I'll certainly post more details before I execute.
